Minnesota Privacy Law Attorney V. John Ella quoted in Newsweek Article

December 15, 2021 by Trepanier MacGillis Battina P.A.

Minnesota privacy law attorney V. John Ella was quoted in an article on Newsweek.com entitled “‘They Were Spying On Us’: Amazon, Walmart, Use Surveillance Technology to Bust Unions” by Jo Constantz on December 13, 2021.  The article describes allegations that large retailers were trying to sneak anti-union managers into group texts, WhatsApp groups and Zoom calls to  track discussions about union organizing activities. The article quoted Mr. Ella as noting that “Employers do have a surprising freedom to monitor what their employees do on their own systems.” The article further noted that these practices became even more invasive as the shift to remote work dissolved boundaries between home and work for many.

V. John Ella is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) and has written and presented extensively on privacy in the workplace. He can be reached at 612.455.6237 or at jella@trepanierlaw.com. Trepanier MacGillis Battina P.A. is a business law firm located in Minneapolis, MN.
