On March 19, 2014, Craig W. Trepanier participated in a panel discussion titled, “Working as (or Hiring) a Freelance Attorney” as a part of Minnesota Continuing Legal Education’s seminar, 2014 Starting Your Own Solo or Small Firm. The seminar was held at the Minnesota Continuing Legal Education Conference Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

During the discussion, Craig provided insight from a law firm’s perspective about hiring and working with freelance attorneys in the State of Minnesota. Panelists Karin Ciano and Emerald Gratz also took part in the discussion and provided insight from the perspective of the freelance attorney.
Some of the topics covered included:

• The costs and benefits of hiring a Minnesota freelance attorney;
• How to maintain the independent contractor status of a Minnesota freelance attorney;
• The terms to include in a Minnesota Freelance Attorney agreement; and
• Various legal and ethical issues implicated when working with freelance attorneys in Minnesota.
